Here is the Letter that was written by Yessenia Barrera

Dear Seattle Mariners & Washington State Employee Credit Union,

My name is Yessenia Barrera and I’m a 10th grader in the Wenatchee High School Mariachi Program. It is an honor to nominate one of the best teachers I know; Mr. Rivera. I’m not just speaking for myself, I’m also speaking for my school and community.

Since I was a freshman, and to this day, I see Mr. Rivera teaching all of his students to become a leader by giving us the confidence to talk, sing and play in any occasion. In the past, he always brought students that currently are enrolled in universities to tell us the great impact they had in the Mariachi Program.

Since 2009 the program has had a 100% graduation rate. Every year he has able to get amazing sponsors for the Mariachi Northwest Festival that offers great amounts of scholarships. This year amount with all sponsors combined, there was a total of $25,000 dollars in scholarships. These scholarships are not offered to just Wenatchee High School students, but to anyone that attends the festival and are currently in or wanting to go to college.

As you can see this is also offered to our community. His students and others have an equal opportunity to these scholarships .Mr.Rivera always tries his best to get much money for all of us, as in for scholarships, instruments, microphones etc… and all the things that will help our program because of the great teacher he is.

Our program has gotten so much recognition for all the work he has done. Not only is he a great teacher but a great human being. He always has a positive attitude and greets all his students with a hug or fist bump and always checks up on each of us. In performances, his goal is to get the crowd going and have them participate with us. You can never see Mr. Rivera in a bad mood, he is a great motivator and leader. At the end, I’m sure each student is more confident in their playing and singing thanks to Mr. Rivera.

You’ll never meet another teacher like Mr.Rivera who continues to impact our students, and community and any other place in or out of our state. It would be a great privilege for our program to receive this $500 dollar Seattle Mariners WSECU Teacher of the Week award to our great teacher So that Mr.Rivera can continue to provide necessary equipment, instruments or scholarships for our WHS Mariachi Program.
